We provided the audio system design for the massive conversion of the star chamber of the Calgary Science Centre into the new 870 format theatre. As part of the change from the original Zeiss projector equipped circumfrential seating to the sloped floor seating of the new theatre, the room was to be equipped with a sound system that would support the usual star shows, laser light shows and also stage presentations with live performers interacting with the dome screen presentations.

The system uses a DSP-based multi input/output system for signal routing and processing. This allows multiple channels of pre-recorded audio from several 8-track digital multitrack tape recorders, as well as a live microphone mix to be sent through the multi-channel loudspeaker system. The low frequency content is delivered through dual 18" subwoofers equipped with a extended low frequency processor that provides the capability of response down to 10Hz under optimum conditions.

The new theatre format has allowed the Science Centre's production staff greatly enhanced flexibility in the creation of innovative presentations. The computer programmed audio system is easily reconfigured to accommodate any new feature or configuration that may arise during the show creation. The ability to add signal processing in software without having to acquire new audio processing hardware on a permanent or rental basis is a big benefit.
